Chris and his team at Dan’s Merrifield Sunoco have been taking care of our cars for many years. :-) They are hardworking, communicative and fair. He took care of my 2005 Honda and it “lived” many extra years because of his team. We now have a Jeep Cherokee and a Mazda CX-5 that get the same excellent service. We can’t say enough good things about Chris and his team!!

I’m leaving this review to document a concerning service experience. My friend brought her car to Dan’s Merrifield Sunoco on 11/24/2025 solely to determine why the check engine light was on. No additional services were requested. They performed an OBD-II scan, which involves connecting a handheld scanner to the vehicle’s diagnostic port to read stored error codes. This type of scan is typically quick and straightforward, taking only a few minutes and requiring no mechanical disassembly. The invoice lists diagnostic code P0700 with the note “Transmission Issues / Use Caution,” but no clear explanation or recommended next steps were provided. When the car was returned, the check engine light was no longer illuminated, yet the invoice does not document any specific repair or corrective action explaining how it was cleared. For context, this same issue occurred one year ago and was resolved by simply topping off the automatic transmission fluid, which makes the lack of documentation here confusing. The invoice also includes an oil/lube & filter service that was not requested, along with a charge for 2 quarts of synthetic blend motor oil, which is only about 40% of the amount of oil needed for a full oil change. The total charge was $178.37, which seems exorbitant given the limited diagnostic detail provided and the inclusion of unrequested services. I recommend confirming all authorized work in advance and carefully reviewing invoices before paying.

I have been using Dan's Merrifield Sunoco to work on my three cars for many years now. I used to do more mechanical work on my own but I am older now and cars are more complicated. The best thing about this place is that they are super competent. I know enough about cars to tell if their diagnoses and repairs are accurate. They always correct the problem. They will report other potential problems but no upsell pressure or attempts to frighten you into marginal repairs.
